Propane autogas vehicle conversion systems are available for a range of engine platforms. To ensure quality, vehicle conversion equipment in the U.S. must receive approval and certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency before being brought to the market. Conversion equipment is available for dedicated propane systems or for bi-fuel systems that can extend vehicle driving range.
The average cost of converting a light-duty vehicle from gasoline to propane autogas can range from $4,000 to $12,000, according to the U.S. Department of Energy′s Alternative Fuels & Advanced Vehicles Data Center (AFDC) website. Some states offer incentives to offset the upfront cost of conversion.
Alliance AutoGas is one example of an organization that provides a complete propane autogas vehicle solution to fleets. Alliance AutoGas is founded by Blossman Gas, the nation′s largest independent propane company, and American Alternative Fuel, alternative fuel systems specialists. Alliance is a national network that provides fleets with autogas fueling, vehicle conversions and technical expertise.
For this Program, Alliance AutoGas is:
• Providing the autogas conversion systems (Prins VSI systems)
• Performing all of the vehicle conversions
• Implementing autogas fueling stations at the fleet bases
• Providing a year-round propane autogas fuel supply
• Providing ongoing safety training and technical support
Many bi-fuel conversion systems do not void the vehicle factory warranty, as the propane autogas systems are placed over the existing gasoline systems and do not change the factory vehicle parts or assembly. Warranties are available to cover autogas conversion systems. Additionally, many propane autogas systems can be moved from one vehicle to another vehicle of the same make and model if that vehicle will no longer be in service.
There are many autogas equipment providers across the U.S. that provide systems for a range of vehicle makes and models. Visit the AFDC website to find an equipment provider that can meet your fleet′s autogas vehicle conversion needs.
